programmed instruction

a learning technique, used for self-instruction and in academic and some applied settings, in which the material is presented in a series of sequential, graduated steps, or frames. The learner is required to make a response at each step: If the response is correct, it leads to the next step; if it is incorrect, it leads to further review of the material presented in the prior step. Also called programmed learning. See teaching machine.
