any adverse influence on fetal development. Prenatal influences include radiation effects, maternal diseases (e.g., rubella, toxoplasmosis) and behavior (e.g., alcohol or drug use, excessive smoking), blood incompatibility, nutritional deficiency, and stress. See also fetal programming.
