prelinguistic

adj. denoting or relating to the period of an infant’s life before he or she has acquired the power of speech. The prelinguistic period includes the earliest infant vocalizations as well as the babbling stage typical of the second half of the first year. Holophrases usually emerge around the time of the child’s first birthday.
