preestablished harmony

a principle invoked by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz to explain how monads behave in a coordinated and orderly fashion, even though each is independent and follows its own preestablished end. The same principle is held to explain the coordinated interaction between the physical and nonphysical realms (see mind–body problem). According to Leibniz, God is the origin of the preestablished harmony.
