pivotal variable

pivotal variable

a quantity that is a function of a statistic (e.g., sample mean, sample size) and a parameter (e.g., population mean, variance) and that is used in inferential tests based on a normal distribution. The z score, t score, and F ratio are all examples of pivotal variables.
