phthalate
n. a chemical compound that is used to soften plastics and that may be found in medications, foods, toys, cosmetics, paints, inks, lubricants, and many other products. Exposure to phthalates has been associated with premature births, reduced sex and thyroid hormones, and decreased sperm quality.
