phallic stage

in the classical psychoanalytic theory of Sigmund Freud, the third stage of psychosexual development beginning around age 3, when the libido is focused on the genital area (penis or clitoris) and discovery and manipulation of the body become a major source of pleasure. During this period, boys are posited to experience castration anxiety, girls to experience penis envy, and both to experience the Oedipus complex. Also called phallic phase.

1. the recounting by a client of the events, concerns, and problems that led him or her to seek treatment. Therapists can learn much about the motives and origins of conflicts by attending carefully (see active listening) to the stories that clients bring to the session.

2. the use of symbolic talk and allegorical stories by the therapist to aid the client’s understanding of issues. Also called therapeutic storytelling.
