peremptory challenge

a request made to the judge during voir dire that a prospective juror be replaced without indicating a specific reason. In criminal trials, each side is allowed a particular number of peremptory challenges. Compare challenge for cause.

an antipredator behavior in which each of several animals moves or vocalizes in a highly random way, making it difficult for predators to locate and attack any one individual. See also dilution effect.
