parasomnia

n. a sleep disorder characterized by abnormal behavior or physiological events during sleep or during the transitional state between sleep and waking. Examples include nightmare disorder, sleep terror disorder, sleepwalking disorder, restless-legs syndrome (see Ekbom’s syndrome), and confusional arousal, among others. The parasomnias recognized in DSM–IV–TR form one of two broad groups of primary sleep disorders, the other being dyssomnias. Those recognized in DSM–5 are part of a larger category of sleepwake disorders. See also dysfunctions associated with sleep, sleep stages, or partial arousals.
