ovariectomy

n. the surgical removal of an ovary. This procedure may be performed when the ovaries are diseased or injured. Under some circumstances, as when a woman is at very high risk for ovarian cancer, it may be carried out prophylactically (see prophylactic surgery). Removal of ovaries in premenopausal women will induce menopause. Also called oophorectomy.
