osmotic pressure

the pressure required to prevent the passage of water (or other solvents) through a semipermeable membrane (e.g., a cell membrane) from an area of low concentration of solute to an area of higher concentration. It results from the spontaneous movement of molecules that occurs when different concentrations are separated by a semipermeable membrane.
