optometry

n. the clinical field concerned primarily with the optics of the eye and the devices and procedures that can correct optical defects. Optometrists can prescribe corrective lenses and exercises but are generally prohibited from prescribing drugs or performing eye surgery. Optometrists are more clinically oriented than opticians, who make spectacle lenses, but have fewer clinical privileges than ophthalmologists (see ophthalmology).
