opsin

n. the protein component of visual photopigments. There is one opsin for all rods (rod opsin, or scotopsin), which together with retinal forms the rod photopigment rhodopsin. There are three different cone opsins (photopsins), which convey different peak wavelength sensitivities to each of the three different cone photopigments (see iodopsin).
