open-loop system

1. a system that requires constant external inputs, as opposed to one that continually recycles the initial input.

2. a system that will continue to follow a particular set of commands, irrespective of adverse results or altered conditions, because it has no capacity to monitor or regulate itself through feedback. An example is a garden sprinkler system that is set to come on at specific times, even if it is raining. Compare closed-loop system.
