olfactory receptor

olfactory receptor

a spindle-shaped receptor cell in the olfactory epithelium of the nasal cavity that is sensitive to odorants. Cilia at the base of the olfactory receptors contain receptor sites for odorants. The receptors themselves collectively form the olfactory nerve, which synapses with cells in the olfactory bulb. Also called olfactory sense organ. See olfactory stimulation.
