‘ohana

n. the family unit in the Hawaiian culture, characterized by a value system that emphasizes multigenerational kinship, including the prescription of age-appropriate roles, connection to one’s ancestors, respect for the wisdom of elders, promotion of the welfare of children, and the overall sustenance of the family system. Similar ways of conceptualizing family are found in other Polynesian cultures.

tonus

n. a continuous, slight stretching tension or contraction in muscles when they are at rest. For example, the jaw muscles exhibit tonus when not used for eating or talking. Tonus serves to keep the muscles ready for action. See also tonic.
