nutrient

n. any substance required as part of the diet for growth, maintenance, and repair of the body’s tissues or as a source of energy. Nutrients include carbohydrates, fats (see fatty acid), proteins (see also amino acid), vitamins, and some minerals (e.g., calcium, sodium, potassium).
