Northern blot

a method of detecting a particular RNA fragment in a mixture, such as one derived from a tissue extract. It involves separating the various RNA molecules using gel electrophoresis, blotting the separated RNAs onto nitrocellulose, and then using a nucleotide probe to hybridize with, and highlight, the RNA fragment of interest. [named by analogy with Southern blot]
