nondirectional hypothesis

a hypothesis that one experimental group will differ from another without specification of the expected direction of the difference. For example, a researcher might hypothesize that college students will perform differently from elementary school students on a memory task without predicting which group of students will perform better. Also called nondirectional alternative hypothesis; two-tailed (alternative) hypothesis. Compare directional hypothesis.
