noble savage

a conceit positing that people from nonindustrial or nontechnological societies were the most noble of human beings because they were untouched by civilization, which was viewed as a degrading influence on human thought and behavior. Historically, the conceit is associated with Romanticism. [proposed by French philosopher and author Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712–1778)]
