nerve root

nerve root

the part of a nerve that connects directly to the brain or spinal cord. Spinal nerves arise from the spinal cord via a dorsal root and a ventral root, which then combine to form the spinal nerve. Certain cranial nerves also are formed by the combination of two nerve roots.
