Naturwissenschaftliche Psychologie

one of two approaches to the study of psychological problems and issues identified by German psychologists in the late 19th century. This approach (translated literally as “natural science psychology”) adopted the experimental method and laboratory techniques as appropriate and useful for certain classes of phenomena, such as perceptual phenomena. These techniques were regarded as inappropriate for studying higher mental processes, language, and social phenomena, for which a different approach (see Geisteswissenschaftliche Psychologie) was required.
