n. a toxic alkaloid, isolated from fly agaric (Amanita muscaria) and some other fungi, that stimulates certain types of acetylcholine receptors (the muscarinic receptors) in smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, endocrine glands, and the central nervous system. See also nicotine. —muscarinic adj.
