multiplicative model

a description of the effect of two or more predictor variables on an outcome variable that allows for interaction effects among the predictors. This is in contrast to an additive model, which sums the individual effects of several predictors on an outcome. For example, a health researcher could use a multiplicative model to examine the interaction effect of number of cigarettes smoked per day and length of smoking habit on the onset of cancer; the results might be compared to those obtained from an additive model that examines the separate effects of amount of cigarettes and length of a smoking habit on cancer onset.
