moral independence

the state an older child has achieved when he or she can recognize that an act’s morality may be substantially determined by its motive and other subjective considerations, rather than by its consequences. Moral independence is a mark of the autonomous stage of moral development. See also moral relativism. Compare moral realism. [proposed by Jean Piaget]
