respite care

assistance, supervision, and recreational or social activities provided for a limited period to a child, older adult, or person with a disability or chronic illness in order to temporarily relieve family members from caregiving responsibilities. These services may be provided on a scheduled or unscheduled basis, either regularly or occasionally, after school hours, during weekends, or overnight. Also called in-home respite.
