modafinil
n. a CNS stimulant used for the treatment of narcolepsy that may serve as an alternative agent for patients who are intolerant of amphetamines and related stimulants. Its exact mechanism of action is unclear, but because it inhibits the cytochrome P450 2C19 enzyme and induces the cytochrome P450 3A4 enzyme, it may have clinically significant interactions with drugs metabolized via those enzymes. U.S. trade name: Provigil. The related drug armodafinil is used in the treatment of narcolepsy, sleep apnea, and shift-work sleep disorder. U.S. trade name: Nuvigil.
