1. a lack of rapport between infant and parent or caregiver such that the infant’s efforts at communication and expression are not responded to in a way that allows the infant to feel understood.

2. in psychoanalysis, a lack of empathy by a therapist or analyst toward a patient. Compare attunement; empathic failure.
