adj. relating to imitation, as in a young chimpanzee’s imitation of its parent’s actions or a parrot imitating the words of its owner. A mimetic response is a copying or imitative response. Mimetic can also refer to physical features, such as the pseudopenis of the female spotted hyena, which is an enlargement of the clitoris and vagina through which mating and birth are accomplished. —mimesis n.
