military operations that, with the consent of the belligerent parties in a conflict, are conducted to maintain a negotiated truce and to facilitate a diplomatic resolution. Peacekeeping operations may include withdrawal and disengagement, ceasefire, prisoner-of-war exchanges, arms control, demilitarization, and demobilization. Military peacekeeping is frequently carried out on a multinational basis.
