middle ear

a membrane-lined cavity in the temporal bone of the skull. It is filled with air and communicates with the nasopharynx through the eustachian tube. It contains the ossicles, which transmit sound vibrations from the outer ear and the tympanic membrane (eardrum) to the oval window of the inner ear. Also called tympanic cavity.
