methodological triangulation

the use of multiple quantitative and qualitative procedures to collect data so as to generate converging evidence on the topic of study. For example, a researcher studying alcohol consumption might employ methodological triangulation by measuring participants’ blood alcohol levels, collecting self-reports on quantity of alcohol consumed, and obtaining input from peers on quantity of alcohol consumed.

in multiple regression, a technique by which the known variance in an outcome or response variable is separated out into the parts that can be uniquely attributed to each individual predictor variable and the parts that are common to any two or more variables.
