memory span

the number of items that can be recalled immediately after one presentation. Usually, the items consist of letters, words, numbers, or syllables that the participant must reproduce in order. the value of a random variable or one of its functions as derived by mathematical calculation rather than observation. It is symbolized by E(x), with x varying according to the specific item of interest that is being calculated. Usually, the expected value is a mean or weighted average.
