memory attribution

the ascribing of a memory to a source (e.g., a previously experienced event, another person, one’s imagination), depending on the source details retained in memory. Misattributions of memory can occur due to a number of factors (e.g., nonconscious influence of attitudes), resulting in a source monitoring error. Common examples of misattributions include cryptomnesia and false memory.
