membrane

n. a thin layer of tissue that covers a surface, lines a cavity, or connects or divides anatomical spaces or organs. One of the fundamental functions of a membrane is to contain the components within it. In cells, the membrane surrounds the cytoplasm and is composed of proteins and lipids. It is semipermeable and acts to control the passage of substances in and out of the cell (see ion channel).
