mecamylamine
n. a ganglionic blocking agent formerly widely used in the treatment of hypertension. Because of the severity of its side effects, which include tremor, sedation, and movement disorders, this use is now rare. However, because mecamylamine has preferential antagonistic action at nicotinic receptors, it has been investigated as a possible antismoking agent. It has also been used in the treatment of Tourette’s disorder and is being studied as an augmenting agent to SSRIs for the treatment of depression. U.S. trade name: Inversine.
