1. a context or environment within which something else is enclosed, embedded, originates, or develops.

2. a rectangular ordered arrangement (array) of numbers in rows and columns. Individual items in a matrix are called elements or entries. Many different types of matrices are used in statistics, such as the correlation matrix and the covariance matrix.
