the process of prescribing specific interventions or choosing specific therapists for particular patients or diagnostic groups of patients to improve adherence with or effectiveness of treatment. The process is based on the diagnoses, needs, problems, and characteristics of particular patients; on therapist variables, such as race, ethnicity, and experience levels; and on setting variables, such as inpatient or outpatient clinics. Also called psychotherapy matching.
