macula lutea

a small spot in the retina that is in direct alignment with the optics of the eye. It contains a yellow pigment and a central depression, the fovea centralis. Also called macula.

n. any corticosteroid hormone that affects ion concentrations in body tissues and helps to regulate the excretion of salt and water. In humans, the principal mineralocorticoid is aldosterone.
