n. a head circumference that is more than two standard deviations above the mean for age, gender, race, and gestation. Although it can be caused by hydrocephalus or megalencephaly, it does not necessarily indicate abnormality. Benign familial macrocephaly describes a genetic tendency toward large head size that does not result in cognitive or neurological impairment. Compare microcephaly. —macrocephalic adj.
