macrobiotics

n. a theory of nutrition that is based on achieving balance and harmony between foods that are classified, according to the Chinese concept, as either yin or yang (see yin and yang). Macrobiotic diets consist mainly of whole grains and vegetables, with fruit and occasional fish; animal products are avoided. Food is prepared and cooked in particular ways to preserve the yin and yang characteristics. [introduced to the West by Japanese educator George Ohsawa (1893–1966)]
