loxapine

loxapine

n. an antipsychotic introduced into the U.S. market in the early 1970s. Loxapine differs from the conventional antipsychotics in that it binds strongly to serotonergic as well as dopaminergic receptors. Although its chemical structure (see dibenzoxazepine) is similar to that of the atypical antipsychotic clozapine, loxapine has the same antipsychotic, antiemetic, sedative, and extrapyramidal properties as the conventional antipsychotic agents. U.S. trade name: Loxitane.
