linear model

any model for empirical data that attempts to relate the values of an outcome or dependent variable to the explanatory or independent variables through a linear function, this is, one that simply sums terms and includes no exponents greater than 1. Most commonly used statistical techniques (analysis of variance, regression analysis, etc.) can be represented as linear models. Compare nonlinear model.

n. a lay word that is nearly synonymous with reinforcement. Sometimes it is used to describe the intent of someone providing a consequence for behavior, rather than the effectiveness of the consequence (as is required in the definition of reinforcement) in influencing the frequency or probability of occurrence of a particular behavior.
