left censoring

the situation in which a researcher cannot determine the precise time at which a target event occurred for some individuals within a sample because those participants experienced the event prior to the observation period. For example, left censoring might arise in a study of alcohol initiation among high school students because a subset of the sample is likely to have initiated use prior to high school entry. See also right censoring.
