1. an individual who guides others in their pursuits, often by organizing, directing, coordinating, and motivating their efforts.

2. an individual of authority in a social group or organization, such as the head of a university department or a military commander.

3. one who is thought to possess the qualities or characteristics associated with individuals who rise to positions of authority in groups and organizations. See also leadership.
