lateral corticospinal tract

the larger of the two subdivisions of the corticospinal tract, the other being the anterior corticospinal tract. It originates on either side of the brain, in motor areas of the cerebral cortex, and its fibers cross the midline at the pyramid of the medulla oblongata to descend laterally in the white matter on the contralateral sides of the spinal cord. The tract has an important influence on spinal motor neurons, especially those controlling fine movements of distal muscles.
