kriging

n. a statistical method that uses interpolation to estimate an unknown value between two known values while minimizing prediction error. For example, a simple form of kriging could estimate that the unknown point halfway between two known points of 1 and 9 would be a value of 5. [Daniel Gerhardus Krige (1919–2003), South African geostatistician]
