knockout

n. the elimination or inactivation of a particular gene in an individual organism or in a line of organisms by an experimenter in order to better understand the function of that gene. Using genetic engineering, scientists replace a normal gene in an organism (such as a mouse) with a defective gene and assess the impact of the defect on the organism. Also called gene knockout.
