subarachnoid hemorrhage

subarachnoid hemorrhage

bleeding into the subarachnoid space surrounding the brain. It may be the result of trauma or a ruptured aneurysm. Initial symptoms are caused by increasing intracranial pressure and can include headache and loss of consciousness as escaping blood distends the spaces beneath the arachnoid (see cisterna), causing compression or spasm of the blood vessels of the thalamus and upper brainstem.
