isomerization

n. a change in the structural arrangement of a molecule without any change in its constituent atoms, which may alter the properties of the molecule. When photons are absorbed by the photopigment rhodopsin, for example, the 11-cis retinal component undergoes isomerization and triggers a biochemical cascade that ultimately results in a visual signal.
